This year marks the 3rd anniversary of MTBO America and we can honestly say we have seen some great progress in the growth of mountain bike orienteering across the country! In just three short years, we helped put MTBO on the map, started the ball rolling by getting orienteering clubs involved in racing, and even found ourselves working with Orienteering USA to begin building the foundation needed to sustain national-level MTBO events. But we are not finished – not be a long shot!
Adrian Jackson (AUS) won double Gold Medals last week in both the Sprint and Long Distance events, making him the only athlete, and Australia the only country, to win two gold medals at the 2009 MTBO World Championships. At the beginning of the MTBO Worlds event on August 11th in Ben Sheman, Israel, Jackson found himself trailing during the Middle Distance final that made him the Middle Distance World Champion last year.
The International Orienteering Federation (IOF) is looking for organizers of WRE, World Cup, EOC/WMOC, and WOC events for 2010 and beyond. Every wonder what it costs a MTBO Event Organizer to get their race sanctioned by the IOF? Neither did we until we started trolling the various documents on the IOF website!
