The First USA MTBO Team

FOREST PARK, GEORGIA — Orienteering USA has announced that, for the first time in American history, Team USA will be fielding a Mountain Bike Orienteering (MTBO) team to compete in the World Championships (WOC) to represent the US in this summer’s 10th Annual MTBO World Orienteering Championships, held in Veszprem, Hungary from August 17 – 26, 2012!

The members of this all-women’s team include Northwestern riders Susan Grandjean and Abra McNair from the Columbia River Orienteering Club (CROC) in Portland, Oregon, and Rebecca Jensen from the Cascade Orienteering Club (COC) in Seattle, Washington. Although none of the members have ever raced in an official MTBO world-ranking event, all three have raced in both USA Cycling mountain bike events and Orienteering USA foot orienteering A-meets. Additionally, team member Susan Grandjean, originally a member of Central New York Orienteering (CNYO), was on three previous ski orienteering teams, most recently in 2009; demonstrating yet another link between the various orienteering disciplines. These pioneering women will be “leading the way” for American involvement in international MTBO has they look forward to attending the MTBO World Championships along with over 300 other riders from 24 nations.

Unfortunately, the rush to get this team into the field has left their budget short. As a result, the first United States Mountain Bike Orienteering Team needs your help to get them the financing them need to compete in August  2012. If you’re a fan of both mountain biking and orienteering, then you can help the US MTBO Team by donating to their effort! Donations made before July 01, 2012, will be worth twice as much to the Team thanks to a matching grant from an anonymous donor, so please donate now by visiting their Orienteering USA Donation website and selecting Team USA – Mountain Bike Team as the program to receive your donation. More is always better, but even if it’s just $5, every donation helps!
