Michaela Gigon, Austria, was again strongest in the women's class when the Mountain Bike Orienteering World Cup Round 2 continued on a techically very challenging middle distance in Gdansk, Poland. In the men's class, Anton Foliforov, Russia, rose from a second place on the long distance to a victory on the middle distance, just before Erik Skovgaard Knudsen, Denmark, who now leads the World Cup standings. The competition was held on an area with a dense path network, which required careful map reading at high speed.

The World Cup continues on Sunday with a mixed relay, where each three-rider team must include at least one woman. This is the first time women and men compete in the same team in the Mountain Bike Orienteering World Cup.

Leading results (Women):
1) Michaela Gigon AUT 52:57
2) Ingrid Stengård FIN 54:12
3) Marika Hara FIN 55:30
4) Martina Tichovská CZE 55:43
5) Emily Benham GBR 56:09
6) Anna Füzy HUN 56:35

Leading results (Men):
1) Anton Foliforov RUS 49:38
2) Erik Skovgaard Knudsen DEN 51:10
3) Tobias Breitschädel AUT 53:40
4) Beat Schaffner SUI 54:45

I don't think MTBO America should alienate themselves from USOF. According to the IOF ByLaws, the USOF does not have be involved in Mountain Bike Orienteering for it to exist in the United States, nor does it have the authority to prevent MTBO America from driving MTBO events in the United States. In fact, the IOF ByLaws "encourage" national federations like the USOF to support organizations that have interest in supporting specialized orienteering disciplines that itself has not interest in. The IOF ByLaws go as far to almost require national federations to "play nice" with brother and sister orienteering organizations and even act as an umbrella to any dealings MTBO America would have or want to have with the IOF. It would be foolish to ignore the USOF as a fellow orienteering organization and would most likely hurt MTBO America's efforts to gain national and international recognition in the long run. Just because they don't use a mountain bike, does not mean they are not part of this community we call orienteering. Embrace the USOF and use them for their Full Member status with the IOF. It will not only help MTBO America to satisfy your Strategic Initiatives, but might even lead to a great source of converts to the mountain bike side of orienteering!

Warm Regards,
